ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:
Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) Flexible Schools Ltd educates over 2,200 young people in 22 Flexible Learning Schools (12 based in Queensland and 10 other schools across Australia) and serves young people who experience complex educational, social or psychological situations which demand unique responses. We enable young people to engage in education in a supported learning environment through a methodology based on trauma informed practice, in which the principles of operation (Honesty, Respect, Participation, Safe & Legal) are embedded.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The role of the Indigenous Community Engagement Officer (ICEO) is to nurture and support the cultural identity of First Nations students and support them to re-engage with education. This work involves engagement with young people, families, elders, staff and community members.
This support involves:
- Engagement, wellbeing and social inclusion responses and program activities for the school that directly enhance engagement, educational achievement and post school transition pathways.
- Intensive case management and wrap-around support to highly vulnerable Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people.
- Assist young people to explore, understand, and strengthen their cultural identity, including assisting them to learn about their culture and connections to community and mob, especially where this knowledge is limited or unknown.
- Facilitate opportunities for connection and relationship-building between First Nations young people across schools to strengthen cultural belonging and peer networks.
- Engage young people in culturally significant programs and activities that promote cultural pride, identity, and meaningful participation.
To perform this role, it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders.

ABOUT YOU
Essential:
Cultural Knowledge and Capability
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures, including awareness of the diverse circumstances and contemporary issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including appropriate negotiation and consultation with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in matters relevant to the delivery of education services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
Qualifications and Professional Values
- Qualifications at Certificate level or equivalent relevant to Youth Support Work or demonstrated knowledge and experience sufficient to successfully carry out the duties of the position.
- Strong understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of social justice.
Youth Work Knowledge and Practice
- Understanding of current youth work practice, trends, and issues in service provision for marginalised young people, particularly within the alternative education sector.
Communication, Administration and Technology
- Sound verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to participate effectively in meetings, undertake report writing, complete case notes, and engage in negotiation processes.
- Competency in computing skills, particularly word processing and internet use, and the ability to develop skills in database systems as required.
Teamwork and Professional Independence
- Proven ability to work effectively under limited supervision while contributing collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
Compliance and Licensing Requirements
- Current and valid Blue Card, or the ability to obtain one.
- Current and valid Queensland Driver’s Licence.
