Indigenous Community Engagement Officer - Hemmant Flexible School
- Fixed term, Full Time

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) Flexible Schools Ltd currently educates over 2,400 young people in 21 Flexible Learning Schools (12 based in Queensland and 9 other schools across Australia) and two Special Education Services Schools in NSW, with approximately 700 staff nationally. Flexi schools serve young people who experience complex educational, social or psychological situations which demand unique responses. They enable young people to engage in education in a supported learning environment through a methodology based on trauma informed practice, to co-create a Common Ground using Operation by Principles, in which the principles of Honesty, Respect, Participation, Safe & Legal are embedded. Our special schools serve young people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The role of the Indigenous Community Engagement Officer (ICEO) is to deliver ‘outside the school gate’, intensive case management and wrap-around support to highly vulnerable Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people. The ICEO will engage with young people, families, elders, and community members to nurture the cultural identity of Indigenous students and support them to re-engage in education. The support provided could include engagement, wellbeing and social inclusion responses and program activities for the school that directly enhance engagement, educational achievement and post school transition pathways.

ABOUT YOU

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirement for proper negotiation and consultation with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on matters relevant to the delivery of education services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

Tertiary qualifications at Certificate level or equivalent qualifications relevant for a Youth Support Worker or such knowledge and experience to successfully carry out the duties of this position.

An understanding of and commitment to principles of social justice.

Sound level of verbal and written communication skills, including participating in meeting processes, report writing, case notes and negotiation skills.

Understanding of current youth work practice, trends and issues in service provision to marginalised young people particularly within the alternate education sector.

Skills in computing (especially word processing, Internet) and skills, or the ability to develop skills in database use.

Proven ability to work under limited supervision and in an integrated manner as a member of a multi- disciplinary team.

Current and valid Blue Card or the ability to obtain.

Current and valid Queensland Driver’s License.
